Effects of Rauwolfia on high blood pressure.
The most common form of hypertension is essential hypertension this means no apparent cause is known and is most probably due to stiffness of the arteries in your body. Arterial stiffness occurs as a consequence of increase sympathetic stimulation to arteries due to biological aging or atherosclerosis. When a heart pumps against stiff arteries (Hypertension) over period of time it gets enlarged commonly known as LVH (left ventricular hypertrophy), a dire complication of long standing hypertension. How to treat hypertension, the best way is to lose weight and eat healthy (Reduce salt intake).
Many people do not know that there are herbs available naturally, which can reduce high blood pressure and one of the important herb, is rauwolfia. The plant was used by many physicians throughout India in the 1940s and then was used throughout the world in the 1950s, including in the United States and Canada. German physician Dr. Leonhard Rauwolfia, who studied plants while travelling in India. Serpentina (Rauwolfia) was selected for study due to its long, tapering, snake-like roots. The Indian political leader Mahatma Gandhi was known to employ Rauwolfia, reportedly using the root to make a tea that he consumed in the evening to help relax after a busy, overstimulated day.
Rauwolfia mechanism of action is well documented. One of the major alkaloids in rawolfia is reserpine. Reserpine binds to protein receptors called vesicular monoamine transporters (VMATs) in the organelle membranes of specialized secretory vesicles of presynaptic neurons. Reserpine prevents intracellular neurotransmitters from binding to VMAT proteins and stops secretory vesicles from up taking neurotransmitters. Ultimately, use of reserpine provides that no or few neurotransmitters are released from the presynaptic neuron. As a result, no or only slight promulgation of the nerve impulse occurs in the postsynaptic neuron.
In simple words. Reserpine removes the store of noradrenaline (neurotransmitter) from artery walls which causes the blood vessels to relax so that blood can flow more easily and also slows the heart rate. This helps reduce blood pressure. By using moderate therapeutic doses, the maximum therapeutic effect of Rauwolfia may not be evident for 6-12 months after beginning continuous treatment with it In a Chinese study on 200 patients with moderate hypertension, rauwolfia alkaloids lowered blood pressure was reduced by as much as 30-40% with minimal side effects (reported in Huang, 1999). Rauwolfia root has proven highly effective (89%) in cases of chronic hives (reported in Huang, 1999.
Anti hypertension medication used by Physician have side effects for examples beta blockers common side effects are Dizziness. Weakness. Drowsiness or fatigue. Cold hands and feet. Dry mouth, skin, or eyes, headache. Upset stomach. Diarrhea or constipation I do not want to scare you but you should try first diet, exercise and herbal help. Even in allopathic medicine first six month patients are counselled to lose weight, control diet and no medication is prescribed. Please remember, if you are pregnant and have already developed complications of hypertension, you should start your anti hypertension treatment recommended by your physician at once. In all fairness, I think it is a good idea to take rauwolfia with other antihypertension treatment. Rauwolfia also improves anxiety and lack of sleep. Rauwolfia is a wonderful tranquilizer that helps with stress and thus allows one to get the rest they need. Rauwolfia has long been used to treat insect bites and stings as well.
